Info Found On Zazzle.com

The power and flexibility of Zazzle’s custom framing solution is unparalleled. Because all prints at Zazzle are of variable size, every frame must be custom built and crafted to the exact size and specification of the print ordered. As such, framing prices are calculated based on the size of the print, on a per inch basis. For more information on each frame style, browse style details in the “more information” section.

Please note: All media types include glazing EXCEPT for Matte Canvas UV and Gloss Canvas UV. For Matte Canvas UV and Gloss Canvas UV glazing may be added by selecting the glazing tab in the Zazzle Print Tool and choosing your desired glazing type.

DIY Business Card & Profile Card Templates for your Zazzle Store

If you wish to make a Profile Card template to either sell on Zazzle.com or for your business to use for ordering business cards for employees, follow the steps below. A template will allow you to create the Profile Card and then you or your customers can order it by filling out the Profile Card information in an easy-to-use web form and have it appear on the Profile Card for purchasing.

  1. Go to the Profile Card Design Tool
  2. In the Getting Stated Dialog Box, choose the card size that you want.
  3. Click on Select Images to add your design/image to the profile card (either front/back or both).Note: The image you will upload should be 300dpi and also a png file. For Chubby size cards your image should be 1050×750px, for Business size cards 1050×600px and for skinny size 900×300px. You can download the template guide files from http://www.zazzle.com/mk/custom/guidefiles.
  4. You may use the existing field names (Name, Address, etc.) as placeholder text for your template, or you may enter your own in the Line 1-12 (or Line 1-6 for Skinny size) fields.
  5. Click on the Make it now button.
  6. You can change the font, font size, color and layout of the text by using the design tool. If you would like to create a Vertically-oriented card, you can change the orientation to Vertical in the Orientation drop down list.Note: you will need to manually re-arrange all of your fields on the card after changing the orientation to Vertical. Under the Edit menu at the top-right there are tools to allow you Align and Space Evenly all selected text fields. You can select multiple text fields by dragging a box around them, or by using ctrl-click.
  7. If you want to add more text or images, click on Add Text or Add Images at the top part of the design tool.
  8. From the Profile Card Options tab you can also choose paper types as well as switching to another card size if you would like to change the default paper type for your template Profile Card.
  9. When you are done with creating your profile card, click on Post for Sale.
  10. After that name your profile card and put it in the appropriate categories, give it a description, tag it, and choose the royalty amount you would like to receive.

After you’ve setup your first few Profile Card templates, read the instructions on how to promote your templates using a Profile Cards gallery.

Zazzle Image Guidelines

Info Found On Zazzle.com

The better your artwork looks, the better your Zazzle products will look. Creating great products on Zazzle is easy, and it all starts with your images and art. Use the information on this page to help you create designs that will look great on Zazzle products. Use the guide files in your favorite design software.

Image Type

Zazzle supports images in both JPEG and PNG formats. Both formats will produce great quality products as long as the resolution meets or exceeds our recommendations. With PNG, we support full transparency of your images as you design. GIF and TIFF images are also supported, however, please make sure the quality of your image is high enough for printing on a product.

We recommend using an sRGB color profile for images, because, at this time, our website is optimized for that specific colorspace. However, we do support CMYK based images as well.

Image size and resolution

To ensure your images are the correct size and resolution, we recommend starting with one of the Zazzle Guide Files. These guide files are the correct size and resolution required for great results. Higher resolutions will have even better results.

If you have pre-existing artwork, see the complete list of image sizes and resolutions.

The general resolution requirements are:

  • 150ppi (pixels per inch) for apparel, aprons, bags, hats, mousepads, and ties.
  • 200ppi for mugs, drinkware, calendars, cards, keychains, magnets, postcards, and all stickers.
  • 300ppi for custom postage
  • 100 ppi for photo enlargements/prints, and posters

To fill the full area on any product, we recommend that you use images that are equal to or larger than the recommended sizes. In the Design Tool, a resolution warning will appear for any images sized larger than the resolution of the image allows.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I add an image to a design or product?

In the Zazzle Design Program, you may upload an image using the “Upload a New Image” button or import an image from your MyImages collection, using the “Import from My Images” button. If you upload a new image, it will automatically be stored in your My Images collection in case you want to use it later.A great way to build a collection of usable images for products is to use the “Bulk Upload” feature in MyZazzle (under myImages). This feature lets you upload up to 10 images at a time. Afterwards, they will appear in your myImages collection in MyZazzle

What kinds of images does Zazzle support?

We support JPEG, PNG, GIF, or TIFF files.T-shirts are created at a minimum of 150 ppi (pixels per inch). Other products have different resolution requirements.

To fill the full area, we recommend that you use images that are equal to or larger than the recommended sizes.

See also Zazzle’s recommended image sizing by product type.

How do I design for Dark Apparel?

To design your dark apparel shirt, start with our powerful Apparel Design Tool where you can add multiple images, and text in hundreds of fonts and colors to your shirt. Once you have started your shirt, simply select “Basic Dark T-shirt” as your shirt style on the “Apparel Info” tab and pick the color you prefer: black, deep forest, red, navy blue, dark grey. Learn more about Designing for Dark Apparel.

What is the best size and resolution for a light apparel design?

When generating an image to upload to our site for light apparel, the best approach is to create your file measuring 14 x 12 and at a resolution of 150ppi. This way, the design you submit will appear at the same size and aspect ratio when your product is manufactured. If you save your file as a JPEG, the white portions it contains will be omitted, so you do not have to worry about the white box that encloses your design. If you save your image file as a PNG, make sure that area around your image is transparent in order to ensure that everything but your design is omitted when manufacturing your shirt.

Will the white color in my image print on my Light Apparel Product?

We use a brand-new and very sophisticated technology to print the apparel products. The inks are actually sublimated into the fibers of the t-shirt, which makes the colors vibrant and keeps the shirts very soft. It also allows us to print thousands of colors (enabling photo-realism) instead of a few, compared to screen printers. Unfortunately, the technology does not yet support printing “white” coloring, because our process lacks white ink. Comparable to your printer at home, our system processes “white” portions of images as transparencies, and omits them. In short, all white portions assume the color of the shirt they are placed on. We protect against this by no longer allowing white text to be selected. At this time, the only way around this problem is to print your image on a white shirt, or to design your image for a Dark Apparel product where white can be printed. For information on Dark Apparel Designs, please see Designing for Dark Apparel.

Will the black background of my graphic match the black color of my Dark Apparel product?

In order to best match the color of the dark apparel your product will be printed on, we recommend removing the black background on your image and replacing it with transparency. For more information, please see Designing for Dark Apparel.

Special Instructions for Apparel

Zazzle’s state-of-the-art apparel printing allows for unparalleled results. The below instructions will help you create the best images to ensure the highest quality reproduction on your apparel products.

When designing for dark apparel, you now have the ability to specify which parts of your image should be transparent, and which parts should actually be printed as ‘white’. After you’ve added an image to your design, look under advanced options in the design tool and use the ’show whites in image as transparent’ checkbox. Note that this checkbox is ignored for light apparel.

Be sure to adhere to the minimum resolution of 150ppi when designing for apparel. Using the Guide Files will help.

The Color White

White is not printed on light-colored Zazzle apparel (including grey, ash, natural, light blue, pink, light green, etc.) In this case, any white in your design will appear as the color of the shirt.

On Zazzle Dark apparel (black, red, etc.) we have a special printing process that allows us to print white on these shirts.

Designing for Dark Apparel

When designing for dark apparel, you now have the ability to specify which parts of your image should be transparent, and which parts should actually be printed as ‘white’. After you’ve added an image to your design, look under advanced options in the design tool and use the ’show whites in image as transparent’ checkbox. Note that this checkbox is ignored for light apparel.

Designing with Text

You can easily add text in any color on your design. White text looks great on a black t-shirt!

Designing with Images

As with all other products, Zazzle supports images in either PNG or JPEG formats. For dark apparel specifically, we recommend using PNG images with transparency – with PNG images, any areas that are supposed to be transparent will not be printed, and all other colors including white will be printed as intended. The only way to specify that ‘white’ will be printed is if you use images with transparency. Partial transparency is not supported, if an area is not fully transparent, it will be printed as opaque.

  • horizontal: 2100 x 1800 pixels = 14″ x 12″
  • vertical: 1800 x 2100 pixels = 12″ x 14″
The images you upload will be converted to 150ppi (pixels per inch) if they aren’t already at this resolution. This means every 150 pixels in your image will become 1 inch when printed. For example, if you submit a 1200 pixel by 1500 pixel image for an apparel product, it will be printed at 8″ by 10″. (1200 pixels table divided by 150 pixels/inch = 8 inches, 1500 pixels tableided by 150 pixels/inch = 10 inches.)
Aprons

150ppi

  • Apron design area (9″ x 7.7″) = 1350 x 1155 pixels
To fill the full area, we recommend that you use images that are equal to or larger than the recommended sizes. For images smaller than these sizes, you should not fill the full area, but will have additional “white space”
Bags

150ppi

  • Classic Bag, Beach Bag (10.6″ x 9″) = 1590 x 1350 pixels
  • Accent Bag (8.5″ x 7.2″) = 1275 x 1080 pixels
  • Impulse, Floral, Blue Striped (6.5″ x 5.5″) = 975 x 825 pixels
To fill the full area, we recommend that you use images that are equal to or larger than the recommended sizes. For images smaller than these sizes, you should not fill the full area, but will have additional “white space”
Bumper stickers

200ppi

  • Bumper sticker design area (11″ x 3″) = 2200 x 600 pixels
To fill the full area, we recommend that you use images that are equal to or larger than the recommended sizes. You can design your bumper sticker with images much smaller than these recommended sizes and place them anywhere on the bumper sticker.

If your image is bigger than these sizes, it’ll turn out even better since it will be printed at an even higher resolution than the minimum.

  • Greeting Card (horizontal): 1000 x 1400 pixels = 5″ x 7″
  • Note Cards (vertical): 800 x 1120 pixels = 5.6″ x 4″
  • Note Cards (horizontal): 1120 x 800 pixels = 4″ x 5.6″
If your image is smaller than the maximum sizes, there will be some extra “white space” that will not be printed.

If your image is bigger than the maximum sizes, it will automatically be scaled down to the maximum size. The resolution of the image will be maintained, so it will actually be printed at a higher resolution than the standard for the particular product being designed.

  • Large Horizontal = 513 x 366 pixels
  • Large Vertical = 366 x 513 pixels
  • Medium Horizontal = 426 x 321 pixels
  • Medium Vertical = 321 x 426 pixels
  • Small = 321 x 321 pixels
If your image is smaller than the maximum sizes, there will be some extra “white space” that will not be printed.

If your image is bigger than the maximum sizes, it will automatically be scaled down to the maximum size. The resolution of the image will be maintained, so it will actually be printed at a higher resolution than the standard for the particular product being designed.

  • 1.25″ round = 250 x 250 pixels
  • 2.25″ round = 450 x 450 pixels
  • 3″ round = 600 x 600 pixels
  • 2″ square = 400 x 400 pixels
To fill the full area, we recommend that you use images that are equal to or larger than the recommended sizes. You can design your magnets with images much smaller than these recommended sizes and place them anywhere on the magnet.

If your image is bigger than these sizes, it’ll turn out even better since it will be printed at an even higher resolution than the minimum.

Mousepads

150ppi

  • Mousepad design area (9.25″ x 7.75″) = 1388 x 1163 pixels
To fill the full area, we recommend that you use images that are equal to or larger than the recommended sizes. For images smaller than these sizes, you should not fill the full area, but will have additional “white space”

  • Colossal (horizontal): 5200 x 7800 pixels = 52″ x 78″
Tip: Get the highest resolution possible! If you upload a larger image and then choose to print it at a smaller size, it will print at the best resolution possible to ensure a quality print.

We recommend that you add images that are larger than the minimum for the best quality. We will maintain your resolution when printing if the resolution is greater than 100 ppi. For logos, digital art, or anything with sharp edges and contrasts, 200 ppi or greater is recommended.

You can design your sticker with images much smaller than these recommended sizes and place them anywhere on the sticker. If your image is bigger than these sizes, it’ll turn out even better since it will be printed at an even higher resolution than the minimum.
Ties

150ppi

  • Ties are 55″ long, and 4″ wide at the widest point. To design on your tie, we recommend that you use an image at least 800 x 600 pixels and use the tiling feature to fill the tie area with your image. Other images can be added anywhere on front of the tie design area.
If your image is bigger than these sizes, it’ll turn out even better since it will be printed at an even higher resolution than the minimum.

Convert Your DST Embroidery Files For Use on Zazzle.com!!!

[Embroidery Post from Ed Caggiani, User Experience Designer @ Zazzle.com]

I actually had a hard time thinking about what new feature to write about. I was going to talk about the already wildly popular Quick Product Create, but Patrick beat me to it on our regular blog. And who knows, maybe I’ll delve deeper into that on a later post.

So what I bring you today is an improvement to our embroidery offering…DST uploads and a colorizing user interface!

recolor1

Ummm…what?

Ok, back up. What is a DST and what’s this colorizing thingy? Let me explain…

Embroidery requires images called “stitch files” that contain information about when to change thread colors and how to physically stitch a design. Our embroidery machines take these files and know how to sew it onto a product.

Up until now, we’ve used stitch files that contain all that information as well as what color threads to use. To convert a JPG or bitmap image to one of these stitch files, you need a professional conversion done (commonly known as “digitization”).

DST files are stitch files, but they are lacking one key piece of information we need: color data. Without knowing what color thread to use during a thread change, it’s rather difficult to make it look right. The good thing about DST files, however, is that they are a very common embroidery format with a large supporting community of embroidery experts all over that there Interweb -)

Red and yellow and pink and green…

We knew we wanted to support this common format, but we had to build a way for users to tell us what colors to use for each thread change in the file. Enter the colorizing UI (insert dramatic music here)!

When a user uploads a DST file, Zazzle chooses default colors for each thread change in the file…just so it contains something. The results are usually less than optimal. But by going to My Zazzle –> My Images and clicking on the image, there is a link to re-color the file:

Image details dialog

Clicking that link brings up the colorizing UI:

Colorizing UI

The colorizing dialog shows the original stitch file image with the default colors on the left, and a set of color swatches on the right. Each color swatch represents a thread change in the stitch file. It is not uncommon for a stitch file to have multiple thread changes using the same color as a previous thread change. In other words, it is possible to assign duplicate colors to different swatches.

Clicking on a swatch brings up a palette of possible colors. These colors represent the thread spools our machines have access to.

dst_2

Keep in mind that each image can only have a total of 10 colors including black and white.

So at this point, all you have to do is click each swatch and choose the appropriate color. The image updates in real time. Here’s how this file looks after some tweaks…

dst_3

Much better! When finished, just click “Create copy with these colors” to create a copy of this stitch file. Every time you modify the colors of a stitch file, a new file gets created in My Images. This way you can have multiple colorized versions of the same design!

This process is not limited to newly uploaded DST files. If you’ve already had some of your existing designs converted for embroidery, you can also re-color those as well without having to pay for a second conversion!
